2008-2009 EDITORIAL PREVIEW

Each issue of Edible Pioneer Valley includes the following departments, along with a variety of other features and essays, all of which offer opportunities to tell readers about what’s in season, what’s for sale and where to find it.

EDIBLE NOTABLES

The latest food-related finds from the region are featured in this column. Look for tips on where to eat, shop for culinary gadgets or source specific ingredients. Get information on recent food-related books by local authors or on local gardening programs and culinary series.

BACK OF THE HOUSE

This feature goes straight to the heart of a restaurant, its kitchen. Each season, we visit an area eatery where local foods shape the menu, and local attitude shapes the atmosphere.

EXTREMELY SLOW FOOD

A bit of culinary anthropology, with a local chef offering up the opposite of fast and convenient, in recipes that are rewardingly complicated and dishes that are meant to be savored.

INDIGENOUS INDUSTRY

An ode to indigenous ingenuity, this feature focuses on a particular product that symbolizes the spirit of the Pioneer Valley. From a regionally celebrated donut to a bicycle-powered soap manufacturer, we profile small businesses with big ideas.

LOCAL LIBATIONS

Portrays the arts and science of all local liquids from breweries to wineries, cocktails to coffee. Here, we include tasting notes, where to sip and sample, and recipes from master mixologists.

FEED YOUR HEAD

Bookstores rival farmstands in this part of the world. We offer up our version of a book club, inviting local chefs, restaurateurs, farms and other culinary professionals to let us in on what they’ve been reading.

THE REAL DIRT

Farmers and agricultural advocates weigh in on topics affecting the farm community here, giving us an insider’s perspective on the personal and political aspects of running a farm.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS

Here you’ll find a list of tastings, meetings, food festivals and other food-related events culled from press releases.
